NVQ Level 2 - Safety Net Rigger

What is a NVQ

NVQs are formal qualifications available throughout industry and commerce. They are all about proving a persons competence against a set of performance standards. The level 2 NVQ in safety net rigging is made up of 6 units, encompassing a range of subjects, including the use of MEWPs, PPE and Safe Working Practices. These units are “portable” which means they can contribute to achievement in other trades (roofing, steel erection, decking etc.).

The NVQ Assessors role is to gather evidence of the Candidates knowledge and experience to satisfy the prescribed performance standards.

How the process works

The NVQ process allows for a number of evidence types; typically watching the candidate working, evidence of previous training (certificates/cards etc.) statements from "industry experts", previously achieved qualifications, copies of paperwork and photographs.

  • Candidate induction (the Assessor explains the whole process).
  • Both agree a plan to achieve the process and paperwork is completed.
  • Site meetings are arranged (typically 3-4 total) where the Assessor will observe the candidate working.
  • The Assessors work is “checked” by an Internal Verifier who signs off the evidence.
  • This results in the issue of a Level 2 NVQ certificate (sent to the Candidate's home)
  • The Candidate can now be considered competent and can now apply for a Blue CSCS Safety Net Rigger Card.

How long does it take?

Completion of the NVQ is dependant on the assessors access to the Candidate, which is controlled by the employer. The process cannot be completed sooner than 10 weeks from registration. Typically, Candidates should allow 3-6months before completion.

How disruptive is it?

Site assessments are simply observing the candidate doing his/her work so productivity is not adversely affected. Some visits may require “paperwork time”, but this is kept to a minimum.

How much does it cost?

This depends upon a number of issues and candidates/employers maybe eligible funding.
